Comments: I can't believe this country. There were others who were deporting people, The
NAZI's, Janet Reno would be the last I would expect to be no better than the Nazi's who
deported her Jewish ancestors, what ever happened to give us your cold huddled masses. Sec
of State, fled Nazi's as a little girl, and she now is silent. It is said in the Bible
that a child will lead them, I hope so, Freedom For Elian, Freedom For Cuba, REVOLUTION!

Comments: This boy's fate will be the measure by which this country's values
are based. If he is sent back, then the ideals fought for with blood and tears by the
Founders will have been in vain. If this nation turns its back on the innocent, then our
great experiment will be over. Democracy will not have truly won in America. Instead,
pandering to communist dictators will no longer be considered immoral..in fact, it might
become the rule. The boy should be considered an American and should be given American
citizenship. If I were in control, I would hide the boy until he was old enough to obtain
asylum on his own accord. God Bless Elian...and God Bless America if he stays..and God
Curse America if he goes back to a nation of atheistic oppression and tyrannical
dictatorship.

Comments: When people say that he should go back to be with his father, I
agree. Although in this case we're talking about the childs future, His mother didn't die
on the way over here just for wanting to die, she risked her life to bring her child to
have a life free from depression and oppression. Why send a kid back to a place with
limitations on his future, When here he can do basically anything he dreams of. Any
reasonable parent would understand that, To have a child is to create someone and make
sure they have a good life ahead of themselves. This world is all about chances not about
taking away possiblities. If this child is sent back. God know what could happen to him in
the future. He can live like other in cuba and be told what to do and have no opinion or
appeal towards it. Or live here where there are no boundaries on what he can be when he
grows up. Put yourselves in the same position. If you had a child and know that the child
has a possibility on having a future. or Sending a child to a place where that child will
live a life comunism. you make the choice. Also add this to question. if the childs father
was a fit and loving father with a good job and home, Why did the child stay with the
mother and not the father to begin with. makes you wonder doesn't it. Makes you wonder
doesn't it. And people don't be selfish and say for him to go back with the father cuz
family comes first. if someone offered you a job in another state with excelent pay. what
would you do ? Think of your future, pass an opportunity of a life time and stay with your
family. Always wondering " WHAT IF ?".

Comments: I wanted to comment about "J's" suggestion that Elian
would be better off in Cuba. J was obviously too cowardly to even list his email address
or his first name. I could have removed his post, but because I believe in freedom of
speech (unlike Fidel Castro) I decided to leave his opinion, albeit unwelcome and
unknowledgeable, on the board here. This is what he said: "let the hostage ( elian )
go to his homeland, his father, his four grandparents, and one great grandparent. don't
break up a family!!! they will give him something the US can never give him--love "
First of all, if he is a "hostage," he is the first hostage who appears to be
overjoyed at being a "prisoner" here in the United States! Wouldn't it be nice
if all hostages could have it this good? Secondly, how could any parent who truly loves
his children, NOT want something better for his child? Life in Cuba is a living hell. The
food rationing is so bad that parents sometimes go hungry just so their children can eat.
And the nutrition is horrible there. How can children in Cuba grow to be healthy adults on
the what little they have? Would a parent who loves his children want that for a child? I
know that I wouldn't. Plus, we forget one thing. Elian's mother died trying to give him a
better life. Some have criticized her for putting him at risk. I think it took courage.
She is a heroine in my book, and her wishes should be honored. I offer one suggestion to
J. Why don't YOU go to Cuba and spend a year there under the same repression that the
other Cubans are feeling...then suggest that Elian go back.

Comments: Despite the farce that Castro presents himself as, Cuba is still a
Communist Dictatorship, and this can not be, nor is it a nurturing society for anyone to
live in let alone a helpless six year old child. No, it may not be the hell hole it once
was, but compared to what we can provide this boy with, well you get the idea. I laud
Congress for decideing to hold a hearing thereby allowing Elian to enjoy at least another
month in the magical place on earth, USA

both of you to this free country, though she died trying to get you here. I hope you do
stay, you should stay, and I'd hope that Castro, in a show of compassion (which I doubt),
would release your Father to come to the US to be with you and stay!

Comments: Several Comments: First, Elian was rescued at sea, and as our
nation's agreement with Cuba states, he should go back to Cuba by law. Secondly, he is a 6
year old child who should be with his real father. Politics and poklitical backgrounds
should NOT play a consideration in this matter. and Third... if we make an exception for
little Elian... where will the exceptions end? If he stays, by all rights, the 406
Haitians, Chinese, and Dominicans sent back while Elian's case is being resolved should
have been allowed to stay. Why should Cubans get preferential treatment because of less
than our living standards? Give Elian a chance to grow up with his father, and with any
luck, by the time he's grown up, he'll see and be living in a new Cuba, with a new
governemt, hopefully much better than whats there now. Castro won't live forever...
Support REAL freedom for Elian: the freedom to be with his father, freedom to live away
from constant media attention, freedom from being a pawn in the political arena that our
government loves to play in

Comments: Am I missing something here? The known facts of the case are these:
a woman takes her son without his father's permission on an ill-conceived trip which puts
his life in jeopardy. The mother dies, leaving the young boy alone and stranded in a
foreign country. The father wants his son back. How dare anybody presume to say that this
government should not return this boy to his father? Political games do not justify
violating the most basic of human bonds. This is not a referendum on Cuba; nor is it a
dialogue on comparitive politics-----this is about a boy who should be allowed to grow up
by his father's side. If this child should remain here because his mother risked their
lives to give them a better life, then the same benefit should be extended to other
children. Every year people die at the US-Mexico border, people from all over the world
risk their lives to enter this country illegally enter this country in order to provide a
better life for their families. Are they all going to be allowed to remain? If this boy
was 16, and not so photogenic, would there be such an outcry? This youngster has been
turned into little more than a political expedient. In the name of all that is decent
Elian Gonzalez should be allowed to return to his father. Anyone who attempts to
perpetuate this wrong should be truly ashamed of themselves.

Comments: RE: The previous post: Yes, you ARE missing something. And you need
to look at all of the facts. First of all, his mother died trying to RESCUE him from
Castro's oppression. Any loving mother would have done the same. This was not a foolish
act. It was an act of love, that only a mother could understand. No one is saying the boy
should be deprived of his father. That is one element that has been missing from this
whole debate. What we are concerned with is this: Is the father FREELY speaking his mind,
or is he under duress from the Cuban government? And if he is NOT under duress, why has
the Cuban government not allowed him to come to this country to get his child? The answer
is obvious. He might defect, and then be re-united with his son here! You and so many
others are assuming that Elian's father is speaking his true feelings. But since when do
we believe ANY lies coming from Castro's Cuba? Where else in the world does a government
sponsor "Send Elian to Cuba" rallies and force its people to participate...then
punish them if they don't? If you had Castro and his goons with their assault guns
surrounding you...as Elian's father experienced when he first appeared on TV...and you
were in Elian's father's shoes...wouldn't you say what they told you to say? Here is the
issue: Let Elian's father and the grandparents all come to this country to testify FREELY
in an American court of law, where they can speak exactly how they feel without fear of
reprisals from the Cuban government. If they truly want Elian back in Cuba, let them say
it where the have the FREEDOM to speak the truth. That will never happen...and if only one
relative comes to speak in court, that, too, is suspect because the rest of the family
might be punished if this relative speaks the truth. What if, back in the 19th century, a
slave woman and her young son had escaped from their master into a free state, but the
mother had gotten killed in the process? Then, let's say the master ordered the slave
woman's husband to demand the return of her son back to the slave state. Would the Union
government have returned the boy back into slavery so he could live with his father? I
strongly urge you to go to this website: http://www.cadp-nyc.org Read it in its entirety
with an open mind. Then, if you still feel the child should return to slavery and
oppression, then I would urge you to spend a year in Cuba and see for yourself the kind of
hell they are living in. Then tell me that Elian should return to hell.

Comments: Elian's story has been hailed as a miracle... the way he survived
for nights with barely a mark on him, and his total calmness when rescued. He has been
hailed as "The Cuban Messiah". But why should he stay in the USA? He is of Cuban
origin. There is no legal reason for him not to be returned to his father in Cuba, but it
is understandable why America don't want him to. I think his father is taking this far too
seriously for a start; Elian has become the rope in a tug of war between the USA and Cuba,
and his father and Miami relatives. The USA and his relatives on both sides of the sea all
have his best interests at heart, but it is fair to say the Castro doesn't. There is a law
in America (I am informed, correct me if I am wrong) that if someone sets foot on American
soil that they should not be extradited... an anomaly in the law it would seem.
Regardless, I think Elian could be the first domino to fall in the runup to the end of
Castro's regime. If his relatives in Miami and he himself can manage to stay in America,
there is little Castro can do. Good luck, little Elian.

Comments: Re: the previous posts. You should feel proud to live in a country
where you can express differing viewpoints, including those that differ from my own. I
choose not to censor what you have written (even though I normally remove any post with
profanity) because I believe in free speech. Castro clearly does not...and if you disagree
with him, you are imprisoned. Worse, your neighbors spy on you. You have no clue who you
can trust in that country. It is even illegal in Cuba to own a fax machine. Gee, I wonder
why? Citizens of Cuba have their food rationed, and the children there are malnourished.
Regarding your comparison of Cuba to Mexico...I would urge you to read some history and
study the differences between the two countries. You are comparing apples to oranges. The
only similarity is their language. Does Mexico have a dictator who stifles freedom of
speech and freedom of the press? Are citizens of Mexico placed in prison for disagreeing
with their government's policies? Are the citizens of Mexico persecuted for their
religious beliefs? Does Mexico have political prisoners and murder them in cold blood? As
for kidnapping...that is what CASTRO is saying. The child is not being held against his
will. Do you believe that Castro ever tells the truth? The boy's mother DIED trying to
bring her child to this country. What greater love could any woman have for her child?
Kidnapping? Give me a break! If anyone is being kidnapped, it is the Cuban political
prisoners! And if anyone is making it a political issue, it is Castro. Elian's relatives
in Miami love that child (since when does a kidnapper love a child, give him three good
meals, lots of rest, and place him in a Christian school)? It is obvious that those who
have written those previous posts with their profane language do not appreciate how much
freedom we do have in this country. Maybe they should spend a year in Cuba, then, if they
can get out, they should return here and see if they think Elian's family has kidnapped
him. How many Americans have died trying to escape this country to live in Cuba? And how
many Cubans have died trying to escape their country to come here? I think you see my
point. And...finally, since I AM the owner of this board, any future posts with profane
language...no matter WHAT their point of view...will be deleted, and I will ask the author
to resubmit them without the profanities. How about it, Elian supporters? I need some
backing up, here!

Comments: Sorry about the previous two posts, but i cant believe that people
actually want him to stay here. Elian Gonzales is a boy who knows nothing of his future.
1. He doesnt have the knowledge or wisdom to decide where he should stay. 2. It is illegal
for him to be here. The protocol for any living person found in international waters is to
have them depoted to their country. 3. His father niether wants him to stay here, no has
he been declared an unfit guardian, there INS decides that he must leave. 4. Congress has
no right to decide whether he should be an American Citizen or not. People wait in America
for twenty plus years for citizenship, and because if they allow him to stay they increase
their public approval rating, they go for it. 5. He is with his great uncle, someone who
had no ties to him prior to the incident, someone who had no hand in his raising, and
should continue to have no relation, these people are far off relatives. His grandmothers,
who actually had consistent contact with him, even decide he should go to cuba. 6. People
claim his father is a puppet, and the boy is being played as a political football, but the
people, nor the judges, nor congress has the right to make this decision. 7. Rosa
Rodriguez, the judge for the case in Miami, said he would stay in Miami with distant
relatives becuase [direct quote]"I said so". Janet Reno herself said what she
did was illegal and she had no right to this simply because it was politically popular. 8.
There are hundreds of cases like this every year, just because elian gonzales has a
"story", Americans all of the sudden start giving a shit. 9. Whos place is it to
decide that America is better than Cuba? I welcome any email.

Comments: STOP USING ELIAN GONZALES IN YOU IMMORAL POLITICAL GAMES. SON
BELONGS TO HIS FATHER OR U.S. IS NOW TO DECIDE WHO BELONGS TO WHOM AROUND THE GLOBE?
"What right do you have to want him back?" Dear Mr. John Doe, Your ex-wife
recently drowned in Cherry Creek Reservoir. Your son floated to shore on an inner tube and
we took him in to our home. He has his own room with 45-inch TV and computer games. Five
different kinds of ice cream in the refrigerator. We take him to Elitch's three times a
week and all the ball games at Pepsi Center. He loves us, and we love him. What right do
you have to want him back? You are merely his father. It's beside the point that both sets
of grandparents live in your neighborhood. We are rich and you are poor. We are smart and
know what's best. We live in the richest part of Denver. You live in the worst part of
Denver with crooked politicians, poor schools, poverty. You are a mere blue- collar day
laborer, poorly educated. We are highly educated, wealthy and undoubtedly much smarter
than you are. How dare you ask for the return of your son? Our local county politicians
have wrapped themselves in the flag and stated that he should stay here. After all, he
chose to come to Cherry Creek to swim with his mother. She and her husband/live-in
boyfriend sacrificed to take him to Cherry Creek. If you think you can get your son back,
think again. Our county politicians will tie you up in court until the next millennium.
Just because you are a law-abiding citizen is immaterial. "JERRY SCHULTZ"

Comments: I welcome honest debate on this topic...unlike in Cuba, where only
one opinion is acceptable. But I had to remove a post because of profanity. And of course,
the author was clearly a coward because he did not give a name or an email address. This
is unacceptable. Everyone should have a voice in this topic, because that is how we learn,
by talking and listening to each other. But I have no patience with hatred and bigotry
accompanied by profanity. That will not be tolerated. I have a couple of comments on
previous posts that have been placed here. First of all, there are two parties who have
made Elian a political issue. Castro has made this a political issue, because he has made
conditions in Cuba so intolerable that people are dying wanting to escape the island and
come to America. (Apparently, even the bigotry displayed by so many Americans against them
is far more tolerable than the conditions in Cuba.) I know of no one who is trying to
escape from Florida to migrate to Cuba. The other party is Bill Clinton and his justice
department. (I voted for him, I am sorry to say.) The best way to get politics out of this
issue is to let the courts decide...and to make Elian a citizen. Another comment. God
saved his life so he could be free. Should we return him to hell? And finally, the nun who
hosted the grandmothers now feels it is in Elian's best interests to remain in this
country. She is highly respected and has worked extensively with refugee children. And,
most importantly, until she met the grandmothers, she had felt that Elian should be
returned to Cuba. She has since changed her mind. Maybe those of you who are against
keeping him here should get to know some Cuban refugees first hand. Talk to them. I have
done just that. Ask them what it is like in Cuba. Ask them about Castro's atrocities. Ask
them about the climate of fear that pervades the country. It is so bad that neighbors
cannot trust their neighbors, and there are many political prisoners there. What kind of
loving father would want his son to live under those conditions? And...why do you think
Castro refuses to let his father come to this country? Maybe he would defect! Castro is
wicked, but not stupid.

Comments: Monique--Thank you so much for your post in my guestbook. It looks
like lots of people are visiting the site, even though it appears that a majority are
against us. The reasons so many people disagree with us is because of a lack of knowledge
of what is really going on in Cuba. How can they know? All they see are five second sound
bites on TV and crying grandmothers. How can they possibly know how much control Castro
has on his people, including the grandmothers? How many of them have talked to Cuban
refugees first-hand to learn about how horrible it really is in Cuba? The media never
portrays Castro and Cuba in the same light it portrayed Saddam Hussein or Ayatollah
Khomeini....To those who want Elian back in Cuba, it is just a political game, akin to a
difference of opinion between the Republicans and Democrats....not a difference in freedom
versus brutal slavery. So how can we expect these people to look at it any differently? I
make no bones about this Castro is a political cousin to Adolph Hitler. Would any of us
want to send a six year old child back to Nazi Germany if his mother had escaped the
country, then died on the way? I doubt it. But...if Hitler were as adept at influencing
our media as well as Castro has done..who knows if we ever would have fought the Nazis?
We, as supporters of Elian need to educate the masses as to what is really going on. And
the public needs to realize that Castro is not just a political figure that we disagree
with...but an evil, tyranical dictator, a murderer of his own people who cares nothing
about Elian or the grandmothers he is manipulating...but only about himself and his
power....and that Cuba is a living hell, not just a poor country. Until that happens, the
masses will not be convinced. And finally, we have one thing that communist sympathizers
do not have. We have the power of prayer. I have vowed to put this whole matter in God's
hands. We have to believe that he has everything under control. After all, God saved Elian
from death...would God send him to hell? By the way, have you noticed that Elian's father
has not come back to retrieve his child? Obviously Castro won't let him! Any parent who
truly loved his child would go to the ends of the earth to rescue their son from a
"kidnapping," (which this is not) no matter what the risk. Parents who are
reading this, you know exactly what I am talking about. Senor Gonzalez claims he is
"afraid" of being mobbed by the Cuban-Americans...(something that Castro
carefully scripted)...but Elian's mother risked her life...and DIED so that her son would
be free. What greater love can a parent have?

been through alot in his young life. watching his mom die. she died trying to bring him

survivors she wanted him to make it to the United States if she drowned, that was her
wishes. we should respect her dicision. she was not being selfish with that decision. She
wanted a better life for her son . remember in the Bible when they wanted to separate the
child and the real mother was gonna sacrifice her own desires to save her son. Respect
Elians mothers wishes, Keep Elian here! If his Father really cared about Elian he would
agree Elian would have a better life here. He is not with strangers, these people are
blood relatives who are talking good care of him. Elain has bonded with them after the
tragic death of is mother and if he was sent back to cuba all he would have is memories of
his mother and sadness.I feel he should stay here!

about Elian, they are using him to get back at Castro. Elian would be better off with his
family. By the way, Batista was no saint. He was worse than Castro when it came to people
publicly opposing him. Batista only cared about those that had money, he didn't care about
the majority of Cubans that were poor. As a Christian, I am outraged that our country has
not sent Elian back to his father. Kidnapping is a felony. Free Elian, send him back to
his true family. NOW!!!

Comments: Cuba is a horrible place to live. Don't make this little boy go
back to a country full of communism and negative feelings. He will eventually be taken
from his un-loving father anyway because he'll have to go to a work camp. The media has
built Cuba up as a beautiful place with lots of parties and happy people. Sure, the
tourists are happy, and some of the country is still beautiful. But those are the tourist
areas... the REAL Cuba is old and rundown. The schools are small and teach the children
only about their politics and to love Castro & communism. The country is poor. He will
not have the luxuries of nice toys, clean playgrounds, or even a TV. Here, in America, he
has toys, a nice school, video games... all the things he can enjoy in his childhood. Most
of all... he has freedom!

Comments: HOW UNFAIR HUMANS COULD BECOME. This is just a phrase. But how
truthful. People that decided in their hearts and minds that ELIAN SHOULD GO BACK TO CUBA
should re-think and if they let God touch their hearts, with this boy's smile only, they
will find out that definitely ELIAN SHOULD STAY IN THIS COUNTRY - THE UNITED STATES OF
AMERICA- WITH LIBERTY AND FREEDOM FOR ALL. Why can we enjoy liberty and freedom, and would
want this kid not to have it? Ask yourselves and let your hearts work it out? Everyone has
seen in the grandmother's attitude that they are spokeswomen for Fidel Castro. Check it
out when they speak in public, as they are being told what to say.It is either
"Campbell" or whoever it is that directs them to say what they have been
instructed to say. Even the father in Cuba, in Spanish, has people in his back, and we
hear the voices, telling him what to say. This is all a big "lie" in the part of
Castro and his allies. But what is very sad, is the fact that here in this free country,
there are so many people that really support a communist government in this hemisphere. I
was surprised to see hordes of people in Cuba wearing t-shirts with the face of Elian. I
would ask myself, how could they have spent all this money, when they have nothing? They
survive mainly on the things that exiles send to relatives in Cuba. And those in
government well with the dollars from tourists from countries in Europe and Canada as well
as Latin America- Also the dollars that he originally hated so much, that then he wanted
for survival, and is provided to him thru the dollars send to families and relatives in
Cuba from exiles in this country. Well, it was easy. The "famous church
organization" that Campbell directs or heads or whatever, provides the money for
Cuba, as much as they provided the plane which took these women twice to Florida and
several times to Washington to lobby for Castro, with the help of Congressmen and
government officials backed by Janet Reno and many others. This is definitely a disgrace.
Money from taxpayers in the U.S. is being used by this people in this country to cover-up
Castro and his demented ideas. A so-called church- tax-free spends millions in this
propaganda in favor of communism. But it seems that the INS provided, with american
taxpayers money the helicopter that took the grandmothers from the airport to the reunion
with Sister Jeanne. What a shame!!! And they american people is worried that this boy
should be sent back to Cuba. This is ridiculous! What a waste!!!. To make things worse
there is an Organization under the U.N.-UNICEF, that has not said anything whatsoever
regarding this child. Is it that they discrimate against children depending on where they
come from? Have they made objections about the children in Cuba? What is going on in this
world of politicians and politics here? We better keep an eye on all these things and
leave Elian free to obtain his will: STAY IN THE UNITED STATES, where his mother was
aiming to get him the freedom and liberty he was lacking in Cuba. May God bless those that
fight for ELIAN. May God grant the Judges/Lawyers & all those with work to do in this
case - sufficient knowledge to see thru the legalities and FREE ELIAN........... May God
keep Elian and his "american" family in the U.S. in the best of health and free
from any more worries. May God help these grandmothers get safely back to Cuba, to enjoy
the scary life that awaits them there. May God grant the one that would want to stay here
the opportunity to ask for political assylum and stay with the family. God is the
winner!!!!

Comments: Re: The previous poster. You have expressed very well the anguish
that so many Cubans have felt, and you have expressed it well. Those who want to send
Elian back to Cuba have no idea how bad it is over there. So let me ask them this
question...would you send a child back to Nazi Germany? Then why send him back to Cuba?

Comments: Elian does not belong to anybody. Elian is a free soul, who belongs
in a free country, no matter what the deals the President of the United States has made
regarding his freedom, or the opinions of those who have sold their souls to an old fart,
who has had this continent hostage for 41 years, and counting. God bless Elian, & hope
we can yank him away from the Clintons and the Renos, so his mother's death will not be in
vain. Osvaldo Hernandez Miami, FL

Comments: Here is food for thought: If the grandmothers were so angry about
not being able to see Elian, why didn't they spend the entire week at their Miami
relatives' house, bonding with the child...instead of doing Castro's work by lobbying
Congress? Hmm....they don't even vote here.
