Dear Sir, I am a Hispanic American woman now living in Texas. I was born in raised in Puerto Rico where I attended school with many friends whose families were forced to flee Cuba when Castro took over. I am so upset that this administration would put politics over the welfare of this child that I simply don't know what to do!! I have contacted all the Hispanic-American organizations here In Austin to see if anything was being planned to show support for our brothers and sisters in Miami. Sadly, nothing at all is planned. I so frustrated! I think the U.S. government has lied to Elian's uncle and has denied this child his day in court. My suggestion is not within the law, but since the government can break its own laws then anything is fair at this point! Hide Elian! I'm willing to hide him personally even if it means going to jail! No! I'm not seeking publicity for myself! I am a grandmother who has spent many a year in the Texas courts trying to get custody of my grandson. What I learned from this is the following. Child Protective services and groups such as the INS claim to have the "best interest" of the child at heart. When in fact there agenda is to reunite children with their "parents" at any cost! This cost sometimes the childs life! Then they say, oops,we made a mistake! Well it's too late then! The sad thing is that they keep making the same mistake over and over again and as a result children die! Fortunately, we got custody of our grandchild and he is now safe and happy! I want the same for Elian and all children! Please help me help this child in any way possible. If I had the money, I would go to Miami personally and stand side by side with all those who are surrounding Elian's home. Unfortunately, I can not for lack of funds! Please let me know what I can do from here to help. We must not allow this government, who by the way, allows known terrorist cells to exist here without fear of deportation, to railroad this child back to Cuba to suit its own political goals and agenda! Thank you for hearing me out as I speak freely! Something I could never do in Cuba! Judith Roscher @jroscher@texas.net (512)258-2630

Hi Keith- I met you yesterday at Elian's house. We were a few of the few too many citizens from America who came from Ft. Myers in support of Elian. I left there feeling drained and embarrassed to be a part of a country of people of who, for the most part, seem to take their freedom for granted. We could use a lesson from the Cuban community in compassion and responsibility. Being there was one of the most powerful events I've been involved with.

We are now on the home stretch in our battle to keep Elian Gonzalez in freedom. Our only hope now is for a miracle...so my only prayer is "Lord, please keep Elian here." One reader thinks that God will perform a miracle. You can read what she had to say by going to the main page at elian.8k.com and clicking on the link. God only knows at this point whether she is right or not. For obvious, reasons, the Elian site will change its focus if Elian returns to Cuba. But the site will not die, nor will Elian's memory. I might have a special "in memoriam" page...but everything else will remain online as I left it, kind of as an archive. I will also change the focus of the guestbook. I will determine how at a later date. What I definitely will do is add a page that will be called "Fidel's atrocities." I will be asking for personal submissions from Cuban Americans...having them tell their first-hand accounts of what life was like for them in Cuba. Finally, many of you who support Elian's freedom in the U.S.A. have been receiving personal emails responding to your posts from a Canadian who is no longer allowed to post in this guestbook. I would encourage you not to waste your time debating this person. If he is not a Castro agent, he should be, because he echoes the Castro line of bull to a tee. His only purpose in writing to any of you is to argue, not to learn the truth, and even when he is confronted with the truth, he nitpicks and tries to trip you up. I would encourage you not to waste your time debating this person. Instead, I recommend that you concentrate on educating sincere, honest people who may differ from you but who also want to know the truth, and maybe even have an honest debate in the process...but don't waste your energy or time with someone who has no desire to broaden his perspective. Does the average American know, for example, that Castro himself has said he will put Elian in a hospital when he returns to Cuba...the hospital, of course, is a place where they can brainwash him. Most people have no idea that Elian is the property of the state, and he will not be in the full custody of his father. Anyway, I do want to thank all of you for your support.

Iboru, Iboya, Iboshishe. Que Orunmila te bendiga ricamente. Oluwo Falade http://members.tripod.com/~Ejiogbe

I think Elian should stay in this country, because he will be free in this country. He will be able to do whatever he wants to do, say whatever he wants to say, and make as much money he wants to make, without having to worry about being in danger of the government. He has freedom in America. He has nothing in Cuba. Besides, this whole thing is nothing but a governmental conspiracy. This is nothing about a father wanting his son, but about a KGB agent trying to prevent a serf from defecting. If this were not true, then why did it take the father so long to get to this country, when Castro gave him permission to come to America weeks ago?Why did he make Washington, D.C. the first stop when he came here, instead of going to see his son first? Why is Castro so involved in this? Whatever happened to the best interest of the child? Elian loves his Miami relatives, and does not want to go back to Cuba. I am very disappointed of the president. He knows what is right for the child, but he says nothing. He is not getting involved. But Clinton is a strong man. He should not let the Communists scare him. He has stepped out of boundary for the right things many times before, so why should he stop now? As for Janet Reno, if she spent at least a month in Cuba, she would change her tune. Besides, if Elian's mother gave her life trying to bring her son here, it will be a profane insult to her memory to send the boy back.

Here is my point of view on the subject of Elian. I believe that America is the land of the free and this is a great place for anyone to come too in there effort to seek freedom. However, what this boys mother did was Illegal and by making the trip to Florida she put her own son's life at risk which is more than Fidel Castro could ever do even under the worst circumstance. And I think the cousins and family that is harboring him should look at what they did to this boy's life while he has been in Florida. If you have ever seen the movie "Annie" it's about A rich guy who takes in an orphan and treats them to a Christmas on the rich side of life and then puts them back into the Foster Care. Now, most medium income family's can provide nice thing's to their children but lets look at the facts. The boy is in a private school which I would imagine without the numerous donations would be impossible for them to afford. He is given a cute little puppy, very expensive play toys such as the 4X4 type truck he was riding during a news cast. That cost $299.00, plus he got a cell phone, and numerous gift from the cuban family's that also reside in Miami. This is going to make his life very difficult when he returns and I am sure he is going to go through a lot of emotions as far as loss goes. His family should have taken him in until his father could come to the US and they should have treated him as they normally would in any family. They shouldn't allow cubans to line up and form a chain - it's only intimidating to the father. I mean half of the cubans that are protesting did not come here legally. It upsets me that so many people come here such as "Hatians, Cubans, Etc."and do not even learn our language. I went to school with lots of cuban children "I was born and raised in S. Florida" but while growing up there parents would show up and I couldn't communicate with them. There children agreed they should learn the language but protest that they do not have to because that is there native language. When you come to the US any person should learn to speak the American language. But that is besides the point. I think people lining up in front of the family's house is instilling fear into this child's head because the family can file as many claims as they wish to protest the father from regaining custody but it comes down to the FIRM FACT (He will join his father in Cuba along with his younger sibling and soon to be step mother) His real family and closest to kin resides in Cuba. His father is the closest link and his younger sibling is next. I think these Aunt's and Uncle's should provide a stable enviroment in which they can all work this out so that they can put less stress on Elian. If you were in Cuba and that was the life you grew up in and you appreciated "as his father does" and the other custodial parent tried to smuggle him into another country would you protest and do everything in your will power to get him back? If you say no to that question then you can't call yourself a parent. Example: Your childs father sneaks him into Mexico where is later shot crossing the border. His family takes him in Mexico where you are stuck in the United States. What would you do? Wouldn't you want him in a country where he does not understand the language? I would love to hear from people who can argue with the way I feel. Because I did look at all sides of the argument and it all comes down to what is legal and what is in the best interest as far as family goes. I understand that Cuba is a horrible place but others are worse just go to Haiti or any other country in poverty. People learn to live under the conditions in which they were raised. Thats all I have to say.

I would love to see Elian remain in this country WITH HIS FATHER!!!!!! Because that is where he belongs, WITH HIS FATHER!!!!!! How can you people deprive this man a very sacred right, to be with and raise your own children, especially when you have done nothing wrong. Elian's place is with his father, wherever he decides to make his home. I live in a $350,000 house in a very nice part of Florida with very little crime. So does that mean I should be able to come to Miami a take any child from a family of lessor means because I can give him a better life. If we let this type of thing happen to Elian then, GOD HELP the poor people of this country. I know your hatred for Castro runs very deep, but don't use Elian as a pon to show this anger. I welcome any constructive emails to futher discuss this most unfortunate problem that faces the poeple of America.

To describe Cuba in like to Nazi Germany is far-reaching. It is great that in this country that people can say as they wish and to fight for what they believe. I belive Elian should be with his father. We have too many children in our own country who need help. Why are we not helping those who are abused - physically and mentally. We have children here who are living in worse conditions than those of Cuba and other nations. My heart goes out for Elian in his loss of his mother - that only emphasizes the fact he should be with his father.

: This whole case is so frustrating. A child plucked out of the ocean, surviving floating in an inner tube and protected by dolphins certainly has the hand of God on him I strongly believe this little boy should be given American citizenship. His mother died for that - anything less would mean she had died in vain. The latest information I have heard about Elian's dad indicates that dad was fully aware of Elian's mother fleeing to Florida. He did not try to stop them then and even called the Miami relatives to let them know Elian was on his way. I do believe this dad loves his son, but I also think that a powerful man and threatening man like Castro can and does intimidate. I wonder if Elian's dad has been offered a better job and some other perks if he returns with Elian to Cuba. The only solution to this whole mess is prayer. We need to actively pray and leave it in the hands of our powerful God. God certainly would have no problem overcoming Castro or even a Janet Reno! Prayer is the answer!

GOD BLESS ELIAN. MY HEART GOES OUT TO HIM. IT IS MY PRAYER THAT THIS CHILD MIGHT BEABLE TO ONE DAY BE A CHILD AGAIN. I AM A SUPPORTER OF ELIAN STAYING IN AMERICA, BUT I AM ALSO A SUPPORTER OF HIS BEING ABLE TO ENJOY THAT FREEDOM WITH HIS FATHER. I SHARE THE COMMON DREAM FOR A RESOLUTION TO THIS WHOLE SITUATION ... THAT BEING THAT THE FATHER WOULD FEEL SAFE ENOUGH IN THIS 'LAND OF THE FREE' TO SPEAK HIS HEART AND EXPRESS HIS TRUE DESIRES WITH NO FEAR OF REPRISALS FROM THE COMMUNIST CASTRO TOWARD THE FAMILY MEMBERS WHO REMAIN BEHIND IN THAT COUNTRY. I AM ASHAMED OF HOW THIS GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN HANDLING THIS WHOLE MATTER ... ALMOST TO THE POINT OF DESIRING TO DISCLAIM MY OWN AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP. IT IS A GROSS INJUSTICE THAT THIS CHILD IS NOT AFFORDED THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE HIS FEARS AND DESIRES CONSIDERED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE WHO IS ALL TO EAGER TO RETURN THIS CHILD TO COMMUNIST CUBA. I'M BEGINNING TO BELIEVE THAT THIS HAS QUICKLY BECOME COMMUNIST AMERICA ... OR ATLEAST IN AS FAR AS ELIAN AND HIS RIGHTS HAVE BEEN CONCERNED. MY HEART REMAINS ON ELIAN, HIS FAMILY, AND HIS FATHER. MY PRAYER IS THAT THEY MAY ALL COME TO SOME KIND OF AMICABLE SOLUTION ... AND THAT THIS CHILD BE SPARE ANOTHER TRAUMA IN HIS LIFE. ONLY GOD KNOWS THE OUTCOME OF THIS MATTER ... AND INDEED, HE REMAINS IN CONTROL. LOVE TO ELIAN. MICHAEL L. RESSLER

I am very sad to see that it looks like Elian may have to depart without having his day in court. I am also disturbed to see that even though Juan Miguel Gonzalez was allowed to leave Cuba he has not been allowed to meet privately with U.S. officials to discuss the possibility of his being offered political assylum in the USA. This makes me feel he may still be under threat of coercion by Castro's "thugs" (his other family members are still in Cuba remember). I understand that in the past there was an occasion when there were 6 members of a Cuban baseball team visiting the USA wanted to defect - however the Cuban security entourage who travelled with them kept such a stranglehold on it's charges that this was not even a possibilty, even on US soil. It's tragic for Cuban-Americans who have sacrificed so much to get here have to witness the USA giving this case such superficial consideration, instead of really getting to the bottom of the father's true situation as I am not convinced as I stated, that he is not being either bribed, threatened or is simply too completely Castro-conditioned to stonewall the idea of defection for himself and his family...he too is a political pawn. If Elian was 18 he would be a political refugee....if his mother had survived he would also be a political refugee, but because of that tragedy it seems he has no rights of his own in the USA and certainly not in Cuba.

I just want to say that I support Elian and his relatives with their wanting to give him a better life. After all it was one of Elian's mother's last wishes. She was taking him out of Cuba for a reason. God saved Elian from the water and He will continue to save Elian. All of God's children are here for a reason and i strongly believe that God sent Elian to the U.S. for a reason, just as his mom thought. May God be with Elian and his relatives through out all of this nonsense. Elian needs to be in a stable home (with his Miami relatives) and start attending school and making friends so that he may enjoy HIS CHILDHOOD as God intended for him.Elian is a child not a prisoner. http://www.hrw.org/hrw/reports/1999/cuba/Cuba996-02.htm#P563 _76060 For all the people who THINK they know so much about Cuba, go to the above address and read up before you make up your mind about this case. The above-referenced page is the Global Human Rights Watch for each country, and that address takes you directly to Cuba's report. Since most people form opinions in accordance to their knowledge of a situation, it would be wise to educate ourselves before expressing an opinion that we may later view as foolish. We cannot compare Cuba to the U.S. because Cuba is a totalitarian state and the U.S. is not. Therefore, of course if things were different Elian should have been returned to his country and his parent, however, noting that this is not the case, Elian's IS an extenuating circumstance and he SHOULD be heard in a court of law. Has anyone even bothered to ask WHY this child does not want to even SEE his father? Why he doesn't run to him and ask for him? Children who have fostered a loving relationship with their parent would run to the arms of that parent after a separation. Why has this not been the case with Elian? Could it be that his "father of the year" persona is overrated? Could it be that Juan Miguel might not be the parent he claims to be? Let's not make this child feel helpless within this adult environment. Let's allow him, even if he's only six, to be heard and expressed.

Every parent I know wants only the best for their children. A better life...more than they had....If it were me....I would want the best for my son...even if it meant not being able to see him again. Knowing he had a better free life with family members who would insure he was safe and loved would be my wish as a parent in this situation.

I SUPPORT THE FREEDOM OF ELIAN. I THINK THAT POLITICS FROM THE PRESIDENT AND HIS APPOINTED ATTORNEY GENERAL SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO INFLUENCE THE RIGHT DECISION HERE. THERE IS A LAW ON THE BOOKS SINCE THE "BAY OF PIGS" DEBACLE THAT ALLOWS ASYLLUM FOR ANY CUBAN WHO WASHES ASHORE IN AMERICA. WHY IS THIS LAW BEING CIRCUMVENTED HERE? AND WHY IS IT THAT OUR LEADER ALLOWS SUPPORT OF A TYRANICAL COUNTRY BY SENDING THE BOY BACK? I THINK THERE ARE OTHER DISINGENUOUS MOTIVES BEING EXCERCISED. IN FACT, JUST 2 DAYS AGO 19 CUBAN CITIZENS WASHED ASHORE NEAR MIAMI, FLORIDA AND ARE THEY BEING SENT BACK TO CUBA? I DO NOT THINK SO. WHY HASN'T OUR NATIONAL NEWS MEDIA REPORTED THIS? A LOT OF QUESTIONS NEED ANSWERING, AND I WOULD ONLY HOPE THEY ARE. He WASN'T surrounded by dolphins, people. I'm in the Coast Guard down here in Miami. Trust me. He was surrounded by Mahi-Mahi, commonly referred to as Dolphin fish. Not the "dolphin" a la Flipper like you see on T.V. Dolphin fish. Mahi-mahi. Eat eat. yum yum.

Regarding Joe's post above: Get a life. Who CARES whether they were dolphins like Flipper, or some other kind of fish? If your post weren't so downright stupidly amusing, I would remove it. I have removed numerous other posts today, and most, but not all were from those who support sending Elian back to Cuba. I need to remind everyone, including those who agree with OUR position: NO PROFANITY! I will remove any posts that use any vulgar language, NO MATTER WHAT THE OPINION IS. Also, you MUST have a valid email address. Don't try to fake it. I check them myself. If the email is bogus, the post gets removed. Period. Also...name calling is not allowed. If you have to engage in that kind of behavior, email that person privately. Finally, I am aware that there are a few Castro supporters who have posted in this guestbook. I am not referring to people who have a sincere disagreement with us, but those who echo the Castro line of bull TO A TEE. As a rule, I remove those posts for one reason. This guestbook and the website it accompanies was designed as a SUPPORT forum for Elian Gonzalez. I will not allow this guestbook to have ANY Castro propaganda. Those posts are always removed. If you have a sincere disagreement with our cause, if you follow my rules, your post will remain here. I am only referring to those blatantly Castro- supporting posters whose only purpose is to cause trouble. Finally, Juan Miguel Gonzalez is starting to show his true colors. When he was confronted by protesters today, he turned around and gave them the finger. What a nice, loving father he must be.
