Comments: The parent has the primary responsability for his child. To all those who think that Elian should stay here because he would have a better life here, no kidding. No one can argue that, but it is a sad day when we allow a parents right over his child to be trampled. Elian was not abused by his father, he was loved. He was pulled away from a loving father and granparents by people who want to make a point to Castro. Lazaro Gonzalez is acting very much like the dictator he so despises. As a parent, I would fight tooth and nail anyone who tries to take my child away simply because they don't beleive my political views. The issue is not whethe Elian would have a bettr life here. He hasn't even been living a normal life since he got here. But while Elian is paraded all over Little Havana, other children are turned away at the US shores, some of them are presently in jail awaiting exportation simply because their parents sent them here illegaly, searching for a better life. The hypocrasy of the US. If your not the right color or look different we can't let you stay. There are hundreds of Elians wanting to stay here, but we send them back. There is no one to hold rally or prayer chains for them. Elian needs to be with his father. That is the right thing to do. Shame on us.

Comments: I am not impressed that Elian's father is that much interested in Elian. Why did he refuse to come and pick up his kid early on. Even now he refuses to go to Florida to pick up his son. He seems to have an arrogant attitude. Maybe he is not a free man to do what he would like to do. This whole deal looks like something staged by Castro to "Stick it" to Cuban Americans in Florida. And he is using the American government to do this for him. We lost in the Bay of Pigs. Are we going to loose Elian too? I feel Elian belongs to go where it is best for HIM, NOT Castro!

Comments: Why is Janet Reno suddenly so anxious to enforce the law when she has looked the other way in much more serious legal cases against her political pals, Clinton & Gore? Also, if Elian hadn't seen his father in 3 years, what's the big deal? Sounds political to us. The family, getting together, should be allowed to work out this truly family matter, alone and undisturbed. Lots of strange things that are covered up are going on here.

Comments: HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO ESCAPE TO CUBA?????? Name one. Come on people, name just one!!!! I am a mother and grandmother. I am thankful that I was able to raise my son in a country of freedom. Likewise so is my son. (Who by the way is in the process of fighting for custody of his 3 children.) So many people are not able to raise their children in a land of freedom, yet desperately want to, but cannot speak about it do to wrath of the dictators etc... My grandparents fled another country (similar to Cuba). They had temporary custody of a young girl that they had to bring without letting her parents know, until they landed in Galveston Texas. As this was in the early 1900's there was no retaliation against the girls family. HOWEVER, her parents hurt and unhappy about losing their daughter wanted her to stay in the United States. They could have had her back, all they had to do was ask. But her parents knew that her best interest lay with my grandparents and the United States. Had they been faced with severe repercussions, yes they might and probably would have asked for her back, with much sorrow. (My grandparents, 2 Aunts and 1 Uncle were transported on a government ship thanks to a wonderful naval officer. They were then transfered at some point, somehow to a passenger ship.) Thank goodness for a caring government at that time and thank God for the caring naval officer. All became PRODUCTIVE, ENGLISH speaking citizens. (My grandfather would have it NO other way.) Senerio: A parent sends his/her child out to work in the field (without sanitary conditions and/or not enough or proper water to drink) for someone else's profit. Do you suppose that CPS would step in and take the child from the parents, due to abuse???? God bless you Elian and your Florida relatives. My prayers are with you.

Comments: If Elian's father were interested in the child's wellbeing, he would be in the process of immigrating to the U.S. to live with his son rather than desiring Elian's return to what is yet another poverty stricken socialist slave-pen. It is morally corrupt to say that the boy should be placed in the custody of his father in Cuba while knowing full well that the Cuban government has custody of both!

Comments: First, let me say that I am deeply disgusted by your comparison of Cuba to Nazi Germany. As a Jew, I would prefer if you could find an alternate way to express your opposition to Cuba. It is NOT Nazi Germany. Millions of people are not systemically killed in Cuba merely for their beliefs. So quit the exaggerating. Secondly, I would like to say that if all of you are so concerned about the welfare of children, why aren't you involved in organizations to improve the lives of children in this country? There are far more children living in poverty in this country than in Cuba. Maybe you'd like to devote your time & energy to helping them too? I understand your rage and anger at Fidel Castro and Communist Cuba, but this is NOT a political issue. It is a legal and moral one. The boy belongs with his father. Comments: How many cases have there been where the US government has refused to get involved when a parent is trying to get their child back who has been taken to another country. Thousands? The reason....so as not to offend the other country's government. Now they turn around and overrule their own courts, effectively using Elian as toilet paper to keep their political behinds clean and not offend Castro. Elian's mother, who had legal custody of him made this choice for her child. Now that she is gone his father has a legal right to make a claim for custody and then where Elian will live will be his choice to make. This is a matter for the family and the family courts and no one else.

Comments: Kieth, I have a few opinions about this video tape that has recently been released by the networks. It is being said that the child is being coached, and has cuased much contraversy. Perhaps this is true, but here we go again, as we have been doing all along, assuming! The real truth is that until Elian is given a proper opportunity to have HIS true, and un-coached feelings expressed in a legal forum we will all continue to assume. Is this not what the family in Miami has been asking for all along? That Elian be given the chance to be heard in a court? Why is everyone so eager to keep this child quiet? Now I am not saying that he should make the decisions on his life, but I am saying that he should be given the right to be heard!! I also question why it is so disgraceful and un-acceptable to the father that the Miami family 'may' have "brainwashed, manipulated, coached, programmed, or what-ever else they may claim" this child, and yet, so 'desires' to return this child to a country where "brainwashing, coaching, manipulation, and programming is an everyday practice? Is it less evil in one country than another? It seems to me to be such a contradiction to be so against it now, and yet tolerate it elsewhere. Has the father ever voiced such opposition to this practice in cuba? Of course we all know that he would never be free to oppose Castro in anything!! I agree ... some brainwashing, programming, etc. might have occurred, but I do not believe that the Miami family is responsible for it. Perhaps this occurred before Elian even got onto that raft to come to the United States. Just maybe his own mother is responsible. Don't you think that maybe she did tell this child all the good things awaiting him in the United States. Maybe she did tell this child all the reasons there were to flee Cuba. Perhaps the picture was painted by little Elians mother, and the only fault the Miami family has in this process (if you want to consider it a fault) is that they made the painted picture become reality for little Elian. Maybe, JUST MAYBE, Elian is after-all echoing what his own mother wanted for herself, and him, and died to have. (though it appears that the DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE is trying to destroy her last living desire, and thus make the sacrifice of her life meaningless). I wonder: Why do we almost NEVER hear anything directly from the mouth of Juan Miguel Gonzalez? Is he free to speak for himself? We only know what 'the mouth-piece' says. Does this not give cuase to confirm the belief that Juan Miguel is in fact NOT free even on American soil? And why is the Department of Justice refusing to acknowledge the perfectly obvious fact that Juan Miguel is being held hostage by the Cuban Communist Government by holding his family and friends in some sort of a Government compound camp while he is on American soil. Why is the U.S. Government allowing Castro's communist Government to control Juan Miguels every word and deed through such a hostage situation? This CANNOT be considered an assumption ... Castro himself stated that Juan Miguels family was in fact being housed in a Government compound in Cuba, but claims it is for their protection. Protection from what? I would suggest that this is more like an assurance that Castro's agenda would be followed to his specifications ... before I could believe that it has anything to do with protection. (except for protecting Castro's interests perhaps). And ... what of Juan Miguels wifes family? Does anyone know where they are? Does anyone care enough to find out? Lastly, lets stop with these polls in Cuba!! Of course it appears that everyone in Cuba wants little Elian back in Cuba!! They would suffer greatly if they did in fact openly disagree with Castro. Freedom of opinion, like so many other freedoms, is nonexistant in Castro's communism. They are programmed to serve, do, live, and think CASTRO!! REMAINING IN PRAYER ... FREEDOM FOR ALL!! Michael L. Comments: This is now over potical matters not six year old boy. Then the relatives release a video of Elian saying "I don't to go back to Cuba" and "I want Freedom" It is unreal. This a six year, he has no idea what he's doing. Even if he stay, think of why he would.
